History of the DepartmentFaculty Profile

The Department of Botany started its bright journey in the academic session 2016-2017 aiming to offer quality education and achieve high standards in teaching and learningin Plant Sciencefacilitated by highly skilled and efficient faculty members.

The department is situated in the second floor of the college with a laboratory having state-of-the-art-facilities, and a well-equipped faculty room and three dedicated classrooms. The departmental laboratory possesses furniture, glass wares, chemicals, well-preserved specimens, reagents and instruments for performing experiments related to all branches of Botany. During the last few years,the department has procured sophisticated instruments like Spectrophotometer, High Precision Electronic Digital Balance, Magnetic Stirrer, Rotary Microtome, Autoclave, BOD Incubator, Centrifuge Machine, Digital pH Meter, Hot Air Oven, Laminar Air Flow, Water bath, Heating Mantle etc through the generous allocation of funds by the Government of West Bengal.

Courses offered by the department aretaught as Generic Electivesforthe students enrolled in the B.Sc. Honours Programme in Zoology, affiliated to The University of Burdwan. In 2022, the department introduced an add-on course to the existing B.Sc. Honours Programme in Zoology. The add-on course entitled “Ethnobotany and Medicinal Plants” aims to acquaint students about the medicinal value of locally available plants and their role in treatment of diseases and ailments in everyday life.

Field studies are regularly conducted to meet the requirements of the syllabusand provide opportunity to the students to learn beyond the classroom.The college library has a good collection of text-books and books for reference work related to the discipline.

The department nurtures intensive faculty-student engagement and provides scope for participatory learning.As of now, the result of the students in the Generic Elective courses offered by the department in the university examination is excellent.

The department now has two full-time faculty members.In addition to teaching,they are actively engaged in high quality research. They regularly publishresearch papers and book chapters in international and national journals and edited volumes of repute.
