The lush green campus of Government General Degree College, Mangalkote is strategically located on an approximately seven acres plot along the Nutanhat-Katwa Road. The nearest railway station, Kaichar (part of the Burdwan-Katwa rail route) is situated about 7.7 kilometres from the college campus. The rural area is flanked by two busy suburbs, Bardhaman and Katwa on its either sides. This makes the campus accessible by the local buses that ply across the Nutanhat-Katwa Road, the rail route and the local tuktuk for the students coming from the villages nearby. Private vehicles are other common means of communication that are accessed by visitors willing to come to the college campus.


Situated amidst the paddy fields and beside the KhudrunDighi (maintained by the Fisheries Dept., Govt. of West Bengal) the college campus offers a serene atmosphere conducive to academics and related activities. The campus has enough parking area for students, faculty members, office staffs and visitors. It has its own canteen providing refreshments on demand. There is ample space for students to indulge themselves in outdoor sports activities such as badminton and cricket during their leisure time.The campus is divyangjan-friendly with plans to upgrade them in the future.

The biodiversity-rich campus is ideal for local field studies for students from biological sciences streams. The local flora consists of various indigenous herbs, shrubs and trees while the fauna mainly comprises of various birds and insects. Soil organisms are abundant in the area given to the fact that it is comparatively less polluted than the urban environments. There is a twenty-four hour supply of filtered drinking water and electricity with power backup facilities mainly for the college office and emergency situations. As of now, internet facilities are available only to the faculty members, library and office staff. Formation of a WiFi-campus mainly for the benefit of the students is in the pipeline.



The academic activities are carried out in the three-storied building that houses 24 spacious classrooms, 03 well equipped laboratories, 01 library, 01 computer room (for teachers) and 01 washroom each for boys and girls in every floor. The seminar hall situated in the second floor forms the venue for various functions, seminars, special lectures and other indoor extracurricular activities. The office and the Principal’s Chamber are in the ground floor. There are three store rooms, one in each floor where essential stationaries, computer peripherals and other things are stored. The students also have their ‘Common Rooms’ one each for boys and girls where they can participate in indoor sports activities like carrom and chess.

The gated campus is safe for the students as well as the faculty members and non-teaching staff. It fosters inclusivity and a sense of brotherhood among the students. Rigorous measures have been taken to ensure the maintenance of strict discipline within the college campus. While the Anti-ragging Committee serves to curb ragging within the college campus and punish those who perpetrate it, the Women’s Cell and Visakha Cell aims to spread awareness about gender sensitivity and sexual harassment through various programmes. The institution has zero tolerance to gender discrimination and sexual harassment within the college campus.



The NSS unit of the college is very active and organizes several programmes on social issues like ‘Save Water’, ‘Safe Drive, Save Life’, etc. within and beyond the college campus bridging the socio-cultural diversification of the adjoining areas and the educational institution. Various other programmes like ‘Campus Cleaning Campaigns’ and ‘Tree Plantation Programme’ are also organized by the NSS unit alone or in collaboration with other Committees to give the students a first-hand experience on social work and upliftment activities throughout the year. Apart from these, spirit of nationalism is instilled among the students through observation of Independence Day and Republic Day. Indigenous education is imparted primarily through celebration of birthdays of freedom fighters and social reformers like Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Rabindranath Tagore and Raja Ram Mohan Roy. Moreover, the students are given platforms to display their creative and co-curricular skills by organizing cultural programmes, essay competitions, debates, etc. Several departments publish their own ‘Wall Magazine’. The college wall magazine ‘Ektara’ is also published with some of the best artistic contributions of students collected over a certain period of time.Physical fitness of the students is taken care of by organizing annual sports day during the winter season.The college also has a ‘Competitive Examination and Communicative English Awareness Cell’ that organizes special classes for students every month to groom them for various administrative competitive examinations in particular and other competitive examinations in general. Considering the situatedness of the college, the institution tries its best to deliver holistic education to the students.
