NAAC

The NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council) is an autonomous government organization under the aegis of University Grants Commission involved in the assessment and accreditation of Higher Educational Institutions in India. Since its inception in 1994, in pursuance of the National Policy on Education, 1994, which called for the establishment of a central body responsible for assuring the quality and relevance of education imparted in Higher Educational Institutions in India, the NAAC has worked towards improving the academic environment through promotion of quality teaching and learning, and has encouraged self-evaluation, accountability, autonomy and innovation among the stakeholders in the higher education scenario in India.

To evaluate the ‘quality status’ of higher education in India, NAAC has devised standardized parameters to gauge conformity to basic standards of quality in various domains of institutional performance such as curriculum coverage, teaching-learning process, faculty development, research activity, physical infrastructure, learning resources, organization, governance, financial well-being and student services and so on. The core value of the NAAC in the quest for excellence is to promote national development based on a sustainable blend of global competencies and emerging technologies on the one hand and core value systems on the other hand. The accreditation process spearheaded by the NAAC enables Higher Educational Institutions to know their strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and challenges through an involved and informed review process, and acquire direction and institutional distinctiveness.

The NAAC committee at Government General Degree College, Mangalkote, is working hand-in-hand with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) in the process of quality enhancement and sustenance. As a newly established government college in rural West Bengal, the college has manifold strengths and weaknesses which are institutionally distinctive. The attempt of the NAAC committee, under the guidance of the IQAC, has been to develop the strengths further and categorically work on the weaknesses, with the larger view to acquire the accreditation of the NAAC. The Conveners of the NAAC committee has participated in several workshops and sensitization sessions organized by the NAAC, Bangalore, the Higher Education Department and West Bengal State Council of Higher Education, the Government of West Bengal, to acquire knowledge and much-needed expertise to set the institution in the right track towards eventual accreditation. Over the last few years, the NAAC committee has been collaborating with the IQAC in preparing AQARs and the SSR. The highly active members of the committee have recently organized a Faculty Development Programme to boost the skills of the faculty members, which is one of the areas of overall quality assurance.
