Sports Committee

Sports committee comes under the purview of the Teachers’ Council and is organised with faculty members from every department of the institution. It aims to keep the students engaged in physical activities that boosts their overall health. It also gives a platform to the students with exceptional athletic capabilities to showcase their talent. To others, it provides a scope for self-discovery through participation in athletics. The talented students are identified and encouraged to participate in district, state or national level sports events. For this purpose, the committee organizes a ‘Sports Day’ every year during the winter season (January-February). Besides, the committee also maintains sports equipment (e.g. badminton rackets, shuttlecocks, cricket bats, balls, carrom board, etc.) throughout the year. Some of these are issued to the students during their leisure time which gives them a brief break from the day’s monotony. Scientifically, it has been proven that students who engage in sports activities can channelize their libido in a proper direction helping them to control their mind and body better than others. As such, they go back to their academics with greater zeal and enthusiasm. It also saves them from various lifestyle diseases which is currently risingon the global front.

When it comes to sports how can one forget the proverb – All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy! Though the current generation is gradually getting addicted to sedentary life, one cannot negate the miracles that sports can have on the physical health and psyche of students. Apart from these personal benefits, sports give the best opportunity to cultivate sportsmanship among the students. They are able to realize that winning and losing are just parts of a game and all that actually matters is the joy of participation.Sports also help to develop certain life-skills such as respect for co-participants, self-confidence, patience, endurance, perseverance and most importantly, leadership among the students. All these prepare them to face greater challenges in their future life.

At Government General Degree College, Mangalkote celebration of ‘Sports Day’ has always been a joyful event sparking much excitement among all the students irrespective of their gender, caste, creed and religion. It begins with singing our national anthem followed by the inaugural speech of the Head of the Institution. Some of the events commonly organized are 100 mts. Race, 200 mts. Race, Javelin Throw, Discus Throw, Long Jump, High Jump, Hit-the-Wicket, Shot put, Musical Chair, Spoon-and-Marble Race, Slow Cycle Race etc.All these events are open to all the students to participate without any discrimination. The committee ensures the availability of a first-aid box in case a student suffers from minor injuries during any event. A steady supply of glucose water is also maintained to help the participants remain hydrated. A healthy snack-box is arranged for all the students as a part of this celebration. While some students actively participate in the sports events, some act as volunteers and help the faculty members to conduct the programme peacefully. Others, cheer their classmates. Nevertheless, the playground adjacent to the college becomes animated with smiling faces. Eventually, the winners are felicitated with certificates and prizes. The annual sports day comes to an end with a group photograph.
