Academic Bank of Credits in Higher Education & NAD/ABC CELL, GOVERNMENT GENERAL DEGREE COLLEGE, MANGALKOTE

The University Grants Commission notification, dated, the 28th July, 2021, laid out the regulations for the Establishment and Operation of Academic Bank of Credits in Higher Education in India. According to the notification, Academic Bank of Credits will be “a national-level facility to promote flexibility of curriculum framework and interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary academic mobility of students across Higher Educational Institutions in the country with appropriate credit transfer mechanisms” to enable students “to choose their own learning path … working on the principle of multiple entry-multiple exit as well as any-time, any-where, and any-level learning.” The objective of the Academic Bank of Credit system is to enable students:

a. Choose courses or combination of courses that best suit their aptitude and interest, and a pace that suits immediate logistics and costs,
b. To tailor their courses or degrees through modifications and specializations through mobility across various disciplines and institutions, and
c. To reap benefits of a distributed and blended teaching-learning system created through the integration of campuses, which not only facilitates life-long learning but offers scope for freedom to choose and change direction or path in the quest for knowledge.

According the UGC notification, the Academic Bank of Credits will function as a digital repository or virtual store-house of academic credit data of higher education institutions with students as stakeholders. The Academic Bank of Credits will allow students to open individual Academic Bank Account in the digital form, and deposit credits awarded to the students by the registered higher educational institution in the Academic Bank Account of the students. The Academic Bank of Credits will register higher educational institutions to ensure opening, closure and validation of Academic Bank Account of the students and ensure credit verification, credit accumulation and credit transfer or redemption.

The Secretary, UGC, vide notification D.O.No.F.1-1/2022 (ABC) dated 22nd September, 2022, urged all higher educational institutions to on-board with Academic Bank of Credits and upload academic credit data of the students at the earliest. In a recent notification, D.O.No.F-1-50/2021 (ABC/NAD), dated 21st February, 2023, has asked higher educational institutions to register under the Academic Bank of Credits only via National Academic Depository to promote the “principle of Distributed and Flexible Teaching-Learning that allow students to learn at their convenience, drop-education mid-way, and pick it up again as per choice and convenience.”
